Directed Time

Have you seen your directed-time calendar for 2026/27? It should make clear how your directed hours are allocated across the year. If you have not seen it, ask your workplace rep or management for a copy.

What is directed time?

Directed time is the time your headteacher requires you to be available for work. For full-time teachers covered by the relevant School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document provisions, the limit is 1,265 hours across 195 days. Part-time teachers have a pro rata allowance.

The 1,265-hour limit does not apply to every role. Leadership staff, support staff and teachers on different contractual terms need to check the arrangements that apply to them.

Check the calendar together

Look at how teaching, meetings, parents’ evenings and INSET have been counted. Discuss concerns with your rep and colleagues, and keep a note of any hours or activities you think have been missed.

Use the NEU directed-time guidance and calculator and directed-time FAQs. If you need help applying them to your contract, contact Rotherham NEU.
